Many homeowners have come to the point of accepting that the energy costs of their houses are a necessary, unavoidable evil. However, this is certainly not the case.
Five Ways to Improve Energy-Efficiency In Your Home
While it is true that your appliances and electrical infrastructure will always come at a cost, it is possible to reduce it to an acceptable level. This is especially the case today with a more eco-conscious world constantly coming up with new innovations. Here are five top tips to reduce energy consumption in your home.
1. Check Your Appliances’ Energy Ratings
Most quality appliances – especially larger ones, such as fridges and washing machines – are now rated according to their energy usage. Pay close attention to the labels when choosing appliances and always go for the best rated one. This is especially important with fridges, which work all day long.
2. Unplug Your Devices When They Are Not In Use
For most appliances, it’s no problem if you just switch them off when not in use, while keeping them connected to the electricity supply. However, with many appliances, such as TVs and computers, there is a standby mode which usually means that, when you switch the machine off, it continues to draw energy while not in use. It’s better to just unplug these until you need them. In fact, unplug them all, just to be on the safe side.
3. Opt For a Front-Loading Washing Machine
Top loaders use more water, electricity and detergent than front loaders. Narrow your search down to a top loader and a front loader with the same good energy rating – and then go with the front loader.
4. Insulate Your Home
Both in summer and winter, an uninsulated home leaks out the warm or cold air generated by your heaters or air conditioners, causing the appliances to work overtime to keep your desired temperature. If your ceilings, doors and windows are properly sealed, the warmth and cool air cool will be kept in, the temperature will remain stable and your appliances won’t draw as much energy.
5. Go Green
All of the above measures are great, but first prize would be to actually change the sources of your home’s energy from coal or nuclear generated power to generating sources that make use of the sun, wind, water and waste. Investing in the necessary infrastructure is a move you will thank yourself for down the line.
