Mounting Locations

Ceiling fans are attached to the ceiling via a down rod, where a light fixture was formerly located. Strong support is required for all ceiling fans. Their heavy weight and rotation puts a strain on the surface they are mounted too, because of this, they must be mounted to conventional ceiling light fixture boxes that are securely fixed to framing members or they must attach to hooks, metal crossbars, or special hangers meant for fans.

Mounting ceiling fans on high ceilings

For safety reasons the fan blades should not be lower than 2300mm above floor level, however the fan blades can be higher than 2300mm.  Solent fans are supplied standard with a 230mm down rod, however the down rods are available up to 6 metres in length, so mounting a ceiling fan to high ceilings is no problem at all.

Ceiling fans can be mounted to angled ceilings

All you need to do is install a wedge that provides a horizontal surface for attaching the down rod. The down rod must be long enough to prevent the blades from hitting the sloped ceiling.

To work out the length of the down rod you require that will prevent the blades from hitting the ceiling, go to http://www.pagetutor.com/trigcalc/trig.html and use the guide below to fill out the table on the website.

Side A = Minimum Downrod Length = 433mm – Round length up (450mm).
Side B = Sweep/2 =1500mm/2 = 750mm
Angle X = Pitch = 30°
Thus minimum Downrod Length = 450mm
